Miami International Airport (MIA) officials are actively pursuing ambitious plans to dramatically expand the airport’s international connectivity by establishing nonstop flight routes to some of the world’s most distant global cities, including Tokyo 🇯🇵, Singapore 🇸🇬, Riyadh 🇸🇦, and Asunción 🇵🇾.

The proposal, which is currently under review by the Miami-Dade County Board of Commissioners, aims to diversify MIA’s international reach beyond its strong foundation in Latin America and the Caribbean.

MIA leadership and Mayor Daniella Levine Cava are spearheading the effort to engage international carriers for direct service to Asia and the Middle East—destinations Miami currently lacks a single nonstop route to East Asia.

The pursuit of these routes could put MIA on the map for breaking global flight records:

  • Longest Prospect: If a Singapore–Miami route is successfully established, it would span approximately 10,500 miles and take nearly 20 hours of flight time, potentially surpassing all current commercial services as the world’s longest nonstop flight.

  • Proposed Destinations: The target routes include high-value hubs like Tokyo (Japan), Singapore (Singapore), Riyadh (Saudi Arabia), and Asunción (Paraguay).

  • Current Reach: While MIA is a major hub, its current 170 destinations (100 international) are predominantly focused on Central and South America.

The officials involved believe securing these ultra-long-haul connections is essential for enhancing Miami’s status as a global gateway for business and tourism. The next step involves the county officially urging airlines to commit to these ambitious new services.
