As the holiday shopping season kicks off, security at major South Florida malls is being significantly increased to ensure the safety of shoppers and deter criminal activity during the busiest time of the year.

Local law enforcement agencies have announced enhanced security initiatives featuring more visible and technological deterrents. The Sweetwater Police Department has launched “Operation Safe Holidays,” a boosted security effort now in its third year at Dolphin Mall. This operation aims to keep the busy shopping complex safe through the start of the new year

Key security measures include:

  • Increased Presence: Additional uniformed and undercover officers, alongside security personnel.

  • Advanced Technology: The use of drones, cameras, license plate readers, and a physical operations hub to monitor real-time feeds.

  • Zero Tolerance: Sweetwater Police Chief Sergio Diez emphasized a firm stance: “Zero tolerance for anybody that thinks they’re gonna come into this mall and commit a crime. My officers are ready.”

The ramped-up security follows a recent robbery at the mall, underscoring the necessity of these proactive measures

The consensus from police is clear: if you see something suspicious, report it immediately by calling 911 or alerting mall security.
