After nearly thirty years of preparation and planning, the long-awaited Port Everglades Sand Bypass Project has officially begun, initiating a massive effort to restore and protect critical Broward County beaches. Broward Mayor Beam Furr confirmed that the initiative aims to move sand trapped on the north side of the Port’s inlet to the south side, safeguarding miles of shoreline. The project is designed to nourish and protect the vulnerable coastline in Dania Beach, Hallandale Beach, and Hollywood.
Mayor Furr stressed the necessity of the restoration, noting that without this intervention, the south side beaches would face continued erosion, leading to several serious consequences:
Damaging infrastructure
Reducing recreational space
Endangering sea turtle nesting habitats
The Sand Bypass Project is projected to take one year to complete and comes with an estimated price tag of $80 million. The undertaking marks a significant investment in the region’s environmental preservation and coastal resilience.
