A high-impact collision between a Brightline passenger train and a vehicle on Wednesday afternoon has resulted in a critical injury to the car’s driver and significant disruption near the 14100 block of Biscayne Boulevard in North Miami. The crash, which occurred around 4:10 p.m., prompted a massive response from Miami-Dade Fire Rescue. The sole occupant of the car, an adult male driver (described by one witness as an elderly male), was found with life-threatening injuries. Due to the severity, the victim was quickly designated an adult trauma alert and airlifted by air rescue to a nearby trauma center. The specific condition and identity of the man have not been officially released. Witnesses near the Lexus of North Miami dealership, which sits adjacent to the tracks, reported hearing the crash and seeing the driver still moving inside the mangled vehicle before first responders arrived.
The sheer force of the collision was evident at the scene.
The train, known for its high-speed operation, came to a stop an estimated 500 feet past the point of impact.
The railroad crossing arm at the intersection was completely destroyed.
Aerial footage captured a heavily damaged car resting beside the tracks, highlighting the force of the strike.
Brightline, which connects South Florida cities, confirmed that service was still operating following the incident. However, trains were required to move slower in both directions through the affected area while crews cleared the wreckage, documented the scene, and worked on repairs to the infrastructure.
Authorities are actively investigating the factors that led to the collision. At this time, no official statement has been made regarding whether the driver was attempting to cross the tracks or if the vehicle became disabled.
This incident adds to the growing number of vehicle-train collisions along the Brightline corridor, a route which has garnered scrutiny due to the frequency of such incidents. The same crossing near the 14100 block of Biscayne Boulevard was the site of a prior crash involving an SUV that had stopped on the tracks in August 2022.
