Snapchat’s Gonna Charge You to Save ‘Memories’

Okay… this might be the beginning of the end of our dog filter era. Snapchat just announced that they’re about to start charging us to keep our Memories saved in the app — and people are spiraling.

For anyone who forgot, Memories dropped back in 2016 and literally saved our camera rolls from collapse. All your random concert vids, blurry selfies, and questionable nights out? All living safely in there. Until now.

👀 Here’s what’s changing:

  • Everyone gets 5GB of free storage.

  • Go over that? You’ll have to pay a monthly fee — rumored at $3–$5 NZD for up to 100GB.

  • If you’re on Snapchat+ or Platinum, you can flex with 250GB–5TB options.

  • Anything above the free 5GB will sit in a 12-month “temporary storage” zone until you either upgrade or download them.

And let’s just say, the internet is not vibing:

  • “The day Snapchat decides to make us pay to access our memories will be a dark dark day.”

  • “Snapchat making us pay to keep our own photos is diabolical.”

  • “I’m about to delete the app once I’ve downloaded them all, cos that’s a whole ass joke.”

Honestly, same. I checked and I’m sitting at 7.08GB right now. Crisis.

But if we’re being real, maybe this is the push we needed to finally clear out those cursed Year 8 vids and 2017 streak screenshots. One user even said: “Thank you for giving me an excuse to delete all my trauma videos.” Mood.

Snapchat’s defense?

“These changes will allow us to continue to invest in making Memories better for our entire community.”

Translation: “Pay up, bestie.”

So… are you coughing up the cash to keep your snaps, or are you about to Marie Kondo your Memories and let the chaos go? ✨
