Former Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau appears to have given a highly public, tongue-in-cheek nod to his new girlfriend, pop superstar Katy Perry, with his choice of Halloween costume this year. Trudeau, 53, took to social media on Friday to showcase a father-son costume featuring himself in a bright, inflatable blue shark suit, while his youn gest son, Hadrien, 11, was dressed as a wounded surfer.

“Ready for Halloween with Hadrien: he’s the surfer, I’m the shark (to his left),” Trudeau captioned the Instagram upload, adding that the duo had built the costume together as “a little father-son Halloween teamwork.”

Fans on social media immediately connected the dots, speculating that the shark was a playful tribute to the infamous “Left Shark” dancer from Katy Perry’s 2015 Super Bowl 49 halftime performance. That backup dancer became an overnight internet sensation for his visibly uncoordinated and improvised dance moves during Perry’s rendition of “Teenage Dream.”

Social media users were quick to pick up on the subtle nature of the reference, especially the caption’s pointed use of direction:

  • “TO HIS LEFT 👏👏👏,” one follower quipped, referencing the moniker of the viral dancer.

  • “Babe we all recognize that shark costume,” another fan commented.

  • “Did you borrow the Left Shark costume?” a fourth asked.

The clever costume serves as a lighthearted confirmation of the blossoming, high-profile relationship between the politician and the singer. Romance rumors first sparked in July when they were photographed chatting and walking near Mount Royal Park in Montreal, followed by a romantic dinner date at Le Violon restaurant. More recently, the couple made a public appearance together to celebrate Perry’s 41st birthday in Paris, where they were photographed smiling and holding hands. Trudeau was also previously seen taking in a show at Perry’s ongoing “Lifetimes” tour stop at Montreal’s Bell Centre. With the viral costume, Trudeau has injected a dose of pop culture humor into his personal life, delighting fans who appreciate the playful reference to his new romance.
