Meghan Trainor is back with a new confidence-boosting anthem, “Still Don’t Care,” a track about silencing critics, ignoring negative comments, and living life authentically. Released on Wednesday (November 12), the song serves as the lead single for her highly anticipated upcoming album, Toy with Me, scheduled for release on April 24. The lyrics deliver a defiant message of self-acceptance:
“You could say what you want, say I’m so hard to like/ You could tear me apart, but I sleep well at night/ Say I’m doin’ too much, and you’re probably right/ That’s the same s— I’ve heard my whole life,” she sings, adding, “I’m too cool to cry, I’m too hot to stress/ And I don’t know your name, but you’re fully obsessed/ To be honest, I get it, I’m impressed by me too/ So I’m too confident, yeah, it’s probably true.”
Trainor also debuted the accompanying music video on Friday (November 14), which shows her confidently strutting through the streets of Los Angeles in a purple bodysuit and platform heels, mingling with onlookers and visually demonstrating her indifference to negativity.
Speaking with People, Trainor shared that “Still Don’t Care” was her way of reclaiming her power after receiving rude comments on social media, particularly following her recent weight loss.
She explained that her social media page, usually a “mom-loving place,” “took a dark turn” when commenters began posting negative remarks about her body: “People started commenting about my body, saying I’m too thin, and that they don’t recognize me anymore. And I was like, ‘Oh, I’ve just been focusing so hard on my health and my fitness that I’ve never felt better.’ So, I was confused and sad and was like, ‘Oh, it’s almost worse now.’ I don’t know what happened.”
After speaking about the issue in therapy and realizing she didn’t want strangers online to have “power” over her, she decided to write the song to reflect her new outlook.
“I liked the idea of… ‘Let me think about it one more time. Nope, I still don’t care,'” she said. “And I know that when I start singing it, it’ll be my therapy, my exposure therapy.”
