George Clooney Says He’s Done Kissing on Screen After Heart-to-Heart With Wife Amal
George Clooney has officially closed the chapter on on-screen smooching.
The 64-year-old actor revealed in a new interview with the Daily Mail, published Friday, Dec. 12, that he’s no longer interested in kissing female costars in movies. The decision, he says, came after a candid conversation with his wife, Amal Clooney.
“I’ve been trying to go the route Paul Newman did,” Clooney explained. “Okay, well, I’m not kissing a girl anymore.”
For Clooney, it’s less about romance and more about realism. He shared that when he turned 60, he and Amal had an honest talk about aging, longevity, and what makes sense for the roles he takes on going forward.
“When I turned 60, I had a conversation with my wife,” he said. “I said, ‘Look, I can still play basketball with the boys. I play with 25-year-old guys. I can still hang, I’m in shape. But in 25 years, I’m 85 years old. It doesn’t matter how many granola bars you eat, that’s a real number.’”
Translation: Hollywood magic has its limits. Clooney has spent decades as one of cinema’s most charming leading men, starring in beloved romantic films like One Fine Day with Michelle Pfeiffer, Intolerable Cruelty alongside Catherine Zeta-Jones, and most recently, Ticket to Paradise with longtime friend Julia Roberts in 2022. But these days, he’s looking to shift gears and follow the example of classic stars who gracefully aged out of romantic leads.
n fact, while promoting Ticket to Paradise, Clooney told The New York Times in September 2022 that a director once criticized one of his kissing scenes with Roberts, who is 58. The moment, while lighthearted, underscored a larger point about how romance is perceived on screen as actors get older.
George and Amal Clooney have been married since September 2014 and share two children, twins Ella and Alexander. Since tying the knot, Clooney has often spoken about how marriage and fatherhood reshaped his priorities, both personally and professionally.
So while fans may miss seeing Clooney’s signature silver-fox charm in rom-coms, it looks like he’s embracing a new era. Less on-screen kissing, more intentional roles, and a lot more real-life romance at home.
