If there’s one thing we know about Chappell Roan, it’s that she doesn’t do boring. But at the 2026 Grammy Awards, the “Midwest Princess” decided to rewrite the red carpet rulebook entirely by turning up in a look that has the entire world zooming in.

The pop sensation arrived at the 68th Annual Grammys and immediately sent social media into a full-blown meltdown. Forget “naked dresses”—Chappell just took the trend to a medieval, avant-garde level that none of us saw coming.

Stepping out in a sheer, maroon Mugler gown (designed by Miguel Castro Freitas), Chappell appeared to be topless, with the delicate fabric held up entirely by nipple rings. The internet immediately began spiraling: Are those real piercings? Is that allowed on CBS?

It turns out the dress was a feat of fashion “wizardry.” It featured an invisible mesh bodice and prosthetic nipples to which the rings were attached. This clever loophole allowed her to honor the archival 1998 Thierry Mugler “Jeu de Paume” inspiration without technically violating the Grammy dress code. The sheer look was tied together by intricate, temporary body art. A massive lace-like tattoo covered her back, while a “Pink Pony” was etched onto her chest. Chappell originally arrived swaddled in a matching maroon cape before dropping it for the photographers to reveal the “bare” masterpiece underneath.

Following her historic Best New Artist win in 2025, Chappell returned to the 2026 ceremony as a heavy hitter with two major nominations for her hit single, “The Subway”:

  • Record of the Year: (Winner: Kendrick Lamar & SZA for “Luther”)

  • Best Pop Solo Performance: (Winner: Lola Young for “Messy”)

While she didn’t take home a trophy this year, she arguably won the “viral” category. Fashion critics are already hailing the Mugler moment as the most iconic look of the decade, cementing her status as a high-concept camp icon.
