Lionel Messi has added yet another record to his legendary career.

On June 22, 2026, the Argentine captain officially became the outright all-time leading goalscorer in FIFA World Cup history after scoring twice in Argentina’s 2-0 victory over Austria during the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The historic Group J matchup took place at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, and featured plenty of drama before Messi ultimately made history.

A Rocky Start Turns Into a Historic Night

The match didn’t begin as planned for the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner.

Just nine minutes into the game, Messi had the opportunity to open the scoring from the penalty spot but sent his shot wide of the right post, leaving fans stunned.

He quickly bounced back.

In the 38th minute, Messi connected with a perfectly delivered cross from Facundo Medina and fired a left-footed one-timer into the back of the net to score his 17th career World Cup goal, tying the all-time record held by Brazilian legend Marta.

Then, deep into stoppage time, Messi found himself in the middle of a chaotic scramble inside Austria’s penalty area. He fought through multiple defenders before poking home his second goal of the night in the 95th minute, securing Argentina’s victory and setting a brand-new World Cup scoring record.

Messi Now Stands Alone in World Cup History

With his brace against Austria, Messi now owns several incredible World Cup records:

  • 18 career FIFA World Cup goals
  • Surpassed Germany’s Miroslav Klose (16) for the men’s all-time scoring record
  • Surpassed Brazil’s Marta (17) to become the highest goalscorer in World Cup history across both the men’s and women’s tournaments
  • Has scored all five of Argentina’s goals through the nation’s first two matches of the 2026 FIFA World Cup
  • Extended his FIFA record with 28 World Cup appearances, the most ever by any player

Messi entered the tournament after already cementing his legacy by leading Argentina to the 2022 World Cup title, but the 39-year-old continues to prove he remains one of the game’s most dangerous players.

Argentina Off to a Perfect Start

Argentina has opened its World Cup title defense in dominant fashion, winning its first two matches while relying heavily on Messi’s incredible scoring form.

After recording a hat trick against Algeria in Argentina’s tournament opener, Messi followed it up with another two-goal performance against Austria, giving him five goals in just two matches.

With the knockout rounds still ahead, the Argentine superstar has already rewritten soccer history—and he doesn’t appear to be finished yet.

As the 2026 FIFA World Cup continues across North America, fans are witnessing one of the greatest careers in sports reach another unforgettable milestone.
