Donkey Is Getting His Own Movie: DreamWorks Announces Shrek Spin-Off for 2028
Everybody’s favorite talking donkey is finally getting his own movie.
DreamWorks Animation and Universal Pictures have officially announced Donkey, a standalone spin-off film centered around the fan-favorite Shrek character voiced by Eddie Murphy. The movie is set to hit theaters on June 30, 2028, expanding the Shrek universe once again.
The upcoming animated film will explore Donkey’s life before he met Shrek, giving fans an origin story they’ve never seen before.
Eddie Murphy returns as Donkey
Eddie Murphy is officially returning to voice Donkey, a role he’s played since the original Shrek premiered in 2001.
While DreamWorks is keeping most of the plot under wraps, the film is expected to focus on Donkey’s adventures before arriving at Shrek’s swamp. Fans have long wondered about the character’s mysterious past, and this movie aims to finally answer some of those questions.
Who’s making the movie?
The creative team behind Donkey is already taking shape.
Charlie Bean, known for The Lego Ninjago Movie, and Matt Flynn will direct the film. Rebecca Huntley, who produced The Bad Guys, is attached as producer, while Michael McCullers, the writer behind The Boss Baby, is writing the story.
DreamWorks is hoping to continue the success of previous Shrek spin-offs like Puss in Boots and the critically acclaimed Puss in Boots: The Last Wish.
Shrek fans have plenty to look forward to
The Donkey announcement comes just as excitement continues to build for Shrek 5, which arrives in theaters on June 30, 2027.
The fifth installment reunites original stars Mike Myers, Cameron Diaz and Eddie Murphy, while Zendaya has also joined the cast in an undisclosed role.
Murphy previously hinted that a Donkey movie was on the way during a recent press tour, revealing that work on Shrek 5 had already begun before confirming the spin-off was in development.
The Shrek universe keeps growing
More than 25 years after the original Shrek debuted, DreamWorks is continuing to invest in one of its biggest franchises.
Between Shrek 5 and Donkey, fans will have two major returns to Far, Far Away over the next few years. If the success of the Puss in Boots films is any indication, Donkey could become the next breakout chapter in the beloved animated series.
One thing is certain: after years of stealing scenes alongside Shrek, Donkey is finally getting his chance to lead the adventure.
