A trip to Publix is about to look a little different.
The Florida-based grocery chain is officially dropping its longtime “10 items or less” rule from express checkout lanes. Instead, the familiar signs will simply say “Express,” meaning shoppers will no longer have to count their cart before jumping into the quicker line.
So, does that mean you can roll up with an overflowing cart and call it express? Technically, there’s no longer a strict number, but that’s not exactly the idea.
Publix says the change is meant to give employees more flexibility to manage checkout traffic and keep lines moving. Instead of focusing on whether someone has 9, 10 or 11 items, associates can direct customers based on what will get everyone checked out faster.
The company first tested the change in its Miami division and has now begun rolling it out companywide. Some shoppers may already notice the new “Express” signs, while other stores will see the change as the rollout continues.
Naturally, shoppers are divided.
Some love the idea of no longer getting the side-eye because they accidentally brought 12 items into the 10-item lane. Others are wondering what exactly makes an express lane “express” if there’s no item limit at all.
Either way, one of Publix’s most familiar checkout rules is officially becoming a thing of the past.
So the next time you’re grabbing a Pub Sub, a gallon of sweet tea and somehow 14 other things you definitely didn’t go in for, you can stop counting.
The express lane has entered its no-rules era.
