King Tide season is back, and the next round is expected October 7 through October 13. According to the South Florida Water Management District, the remaining 2026 King Tide periods are October 7–13, October 24–30, November 6–9 and November 23–26. The October 7–13 and October 24–30 periods are expected to include peak tide days, meaning some of Miami’s flood-prone streets could see noticeably higher water levels.
King Tides are naturally occurring higher-than-normal tides that can push water onto streets and into low-lying coastal areas even when it isn’t raining. Add heavy rain, strong winds or large waves into the mix, and flooding can become much worse. If your neighborhood is prone to tidal flooding, officials recommend moving your car to higher ground before the tide arrives and avoiding flooded roadways whenever possible. And yes, even if the water looks shallow, it’s better to find another route than risk driving through it.
Miami Beach is also offering some help for residents worried about their cars. Through the city’s King Tide Flood Relief Parking Program, residents whose streets are prone to tidal flooding may be able to temporarily park for free in participating municipal garages. Locations listed for the program include 400 W 42nd Street, 200 7th Street and 1661 Pennsylvania Avenue. Parking is available on a first-come, first-served basis, so residents in vulnerable areas may want to move their vehicles before flooding begins.
A few other things to remember: avoid walking through floodwater whenever possible, since it can contain contaminants, and wash your hands, clothes and pets afterward if you do come into contact with it. If you absolutely have to drive through salt water, rinse your vehicle with fresh water afterward to help prevent corrosion. Boaters should also check tide levels before leaving the dock and be especially aware of bridge clearance during unusually high tides. Bottom line: check the tides before heading out, know whether your usual route floods, and give yourself extra time during the upcoming King Tide windows.
