Matthew Perry’s reported passing at the age of 54 has saddened many. The accomplished actor, best recognized for his role as Chandler Bing on the beloved TV series Friends, was discovered deceased at a residence in the Los Angeles area on a Saturday. This information was first relayed by TMZ, citing details from law enforcement sources, and was later corroborated by the Los Angeles Times.

Perry’s Family has sent an exclusive statement to PEOPLE saying that they are “heartbroken” by his “tragic” death.

“We are heartbroken by the tragic loss of our beloved son and brother,” the family says. “Matthew brought so much joy to the world, both as an actor and a friend.” “…You all meant so much to him and we appreciate the tremendous outpouring of love.”

According to TMZ, Perry was found in a jacuzzi at the home, and no drugs were found at the scene. The Los Angeles Police Department received a call at Perry’s address regarding the passing of a man in his 50s, though they refrained from confirming the identity of the deceased.

TMZ’s sources also noted that there were no signs of foul play, and emergency responders were summoned to the residence in response to a report of cardiac arrest.

At the time of this report, representatives for Matthew Perry have not provided a response to PEOPLE’s request for comment.

In 2015, Perry received recognition for his advocacy efforts from the treatment center Phoenix House. He candidly shared with The Hollywood Reporter, “You can’t have a drug problem for 30 years and then expect to have it be solved in 28 days.”
