Three years after the groundbreaking debut album, Lil Nas X is poised to captivate the cultural scene once more. This time, he’s not just bringing music; he’s unveiling a revealing behind-the-scenes documentary chronicling his inaugural global tour, titled “Lil Nas X: Long Live Montero,” set to premiere on Max on January 27, as disclosed by The Hollywood Reporter.

Described as a “diary film,” it delves into the recent tour experiences of the outspoken star and delves into the complexities of being a Black and queer performer. Directed by Zac Manuel and Carlos López Estrada, known for their work on the film Blindspotting and music videos for artists like Billie Eilish and Carly Rae Jepsen, the documentary had its premiere at the Toronto Film Festival in September.

Initial reactions from the festival premiere were mixed. While IndieWire criticized the film as “broad” and found its behind-the-scenes moments “slim,” The Hollywood Reporter expressed disappointment in the film’s lack of a deeper exploration of its subject. On the flip side, Variety hailed it as “rambunctious” and “exhilarating.” Notably, the Toronto premiere was marred by a bomb threat specifically targeting the singer due to his identity as a Black queer artist, as reported by Variety.

Lil Nas X has faced controversy throughout his career for the intersection of his art and identities. The video for “Montero (Call Me By Your Name),” featuring the artist giving Satan a lap dance and followed by the release of blood-filled Satan shoes, drew criticism from conservatives. The rapper later claimed that BET allowed him to perform at the BET Awards only after assuring them he is not a devil worshiper. He also revealed dissatisfaction from the network regarding a kiss with a backup dancer during his performance.

In recent weeks, Lil Nas X has announced his “Christian era,” asserting it to be the “greatest comeback of all time.” Teasing new music with a more spiritual theme, he has released snippets addressing his relationship with religion, featuring lyrics like, “Father, stretch my hands / The lonely road seems to last the longest.” The rapper has further disclosed that a new song with accompanying visuals will be unveiled on January 24.
