Miami-Dade Public Schools are doubling down on their anti-vaping push — and as the 2025–26 school year begins, their smart vape detection system is already locked, loaded, and ready to catch rule-breakers. The district first rolled out the technology last year, and now it’s covering high school restrooms across the county.
Here’s how it works:
Instant alerts: If a vape is detected, the system immediately sends a notification to school staff with the exact time and bathroom location. 🚨
Camera backup: The sensors are connected to nearby security cameras, which instantly start recording to spot who’s leaving the restroom after the alert. 🎥
Noise detection: These devices don’t just stop at vape smoke — they can also pick up unusually loud noises, which could signal a fight or other incident. 📢
Creative disguises: Officials say vaping devices have gotten sneakier, with some now designed to look like everyday objects, like highlighters or USB drives. ✏️
Broward County Schools explored installing similar tech but decided against it — for now.
School leaders say the system isn’t about punishing kids for fun, but about protecting their health and keeping campus environments safe. With vaping products becoming easier to hide and more popular among teens, the sensors are one of the few tools that can catch the problem in real time.
Bottom line: if you thought vaping in the bathroom was low-key… Miami-Dade just made it mission impossible. 🚫💨
