Olivia Rodrigo continues to delve into the narratives behind the tracks from her second album, GUTS. During an appearance on The Kelly Clarkson Show this week, the Grammy-winning artist shared the backstory of her contentious song “Lacy.”

The emotionally charged song quickly garnered a strong following, leading to numerous speculations about the identity of “Lacy,” with fans suggesting figures like Sabrina Carpenter, Gracie Abrams, or Taylor Swift. For the first time, Rodrigo unveiled the unexpected origins of the song.

Reflecting on the song’s outro lyrics, where Rodrigo expresses, “And I despise my jealous eyes and how hard they fell for you / Yeah, I despise my rotten mind and how much it worships you,” the singer-songwriter candidly admitted, “It’s very emo of me, writing that.”

She continued by sharing with Clarkson, “I took a poetry class at USC. I wrote a poem called ‘Lacy’ for one of the assignments, and I really liked it. I thought, ‘I’m going to turn it into a song!’”

Prior to the release of “Lacy,” fans speculated that the lead single from GUTS, “Vampire,” might revolve around a rumored rift with Taylor Swift. Rodrigo addressed these speculations in a Rolling Stone interview, echoing sentiments similar to those in her LA Times interview. She expressed, “How do I approach this? I mean, I’m hesitant to reveal who any of my songs are about. I’ve never done that in my career and likely won’t. I believe it’s better not to confine a song to being about a singular thing. I was genuinely surprised when people interpreted it that way.”
