Universal Music is poised to withdraw its extensive music library from TikTok following a breakdown in negotiations regarding payment terms. This decision would result in the absence of songs by major artists such as Taylor Swift, The Weeknd, and Drake on the social media platform.

Universal has accused TikTok of engaging in “bullying” tactics and expressed dissatisfaction with the proposed payment, alleging that TikTok intends to offer only a “fraction” of what other social media platforms pay for access to Universal’s vast catalog. In response, TikTok has refuted Universal’s claims, labeling them a “false narrative and rhetoric.”

Universal commands a prominent position in the worldwide recorded music sector, boasting rights to an extensive roster of artists ranging from iconic names like the Beatles and the Rolling Stones to contemporary stars such as Elton John and Ariana Grande. Additionally, Universal owns the rights to Sophie Ellis-Bextor’s “Murder on the Dancefloor,” a recent hit on TikTok.
