In Taylor Swift’s highly anticipated album “The Tortured Poets Department,” she pays homage to various recording artists, either expressing admiration or recalling significant musical interactions. One standout mention occurs on the title track, where Swift delivers a memorable name-drop while singing “You smoked, then ate seven bars of chocolate, We declared Charlie Puth should be a bigger artist.”

As “The Tortured Poets Department” storms towards one of the year’s biggest debut sales, and potentially one of the greatest of all time, speculation arises: will Swift’s mention of Puth actually elevate the “Attention” singer’s status? The answer seems nuanced, judging by early streaming figures. In the initial three days following the album’s release (Apr. 19-21), Puth’s music amassed 3.26 million official on-demand streams in the U.S., as reported by Luminate. This marks a slight uptick from the previous weekend, where his catalog garnered 3.13 million streams (Apr. 12-14), indicating that Swift’s nod boosted his streams by just under 4%.

Although Puth was already achieving substantial streaming figures prior to the lyrical reference, two other artists mentioned in the album experienced a remarkable surge in their smaller streaming totals.
