South Florida’s budget-friendly airline is hitting some turbulence — for real this time. Spirit Airlines, based right here in Miami, just officially ended service in 12 U.S. cities after filing for bankruptcy protection for the second time in a year. The bright yellow planes we all love (and sometimes roast) are getting a major route reset as the company tries to stay in the air.

The cities losing Spirit service include Albuquerque, Birmingham, Boise, Chattanooga, Oakland, Columbia (SC), Portland (OR), Sacramento, Salt Lake City, San Diego, and San Jose. On top of that, Spirit’s planned launch in Macon, Georgia — which was supposed to happen on October 16 — has been completely scrapped.

The airline filed for bankruptcy twice — first in November 2024 and again in August 2025 — blaming weak leisure demand and high operating costs. Basically, fewer people are flying for fun, and everything’s getting more expensive to run.

Meanwhile, other airlines are already swooping in to take advantage. United announced it’s adding flights to 15 cities starting January 6, and Frontier is launching 20 new routes with fares starting at just $29.

Spirit says this move is part of a bigger restructuring plan to drop “unsustainable routes” while keeping those famously low fares alive. So even though you might not catch that $49 flight from San Jose anymore, the airline insists it’s not done flying — just reorganizing its vibe. ✈️💛
