Miami is trying to turn GTA 6 clout into actual cash, and honestly? The strategy is kind of insane

Let’s be real: Rockstar Games didn’t just drop a trailer for Grand Theft Auto VI; they dropped a full-on cultural event. And while the rest of us are busy dissecting every frame of neon, palm trees, and swamp chaos, Miami-Dade County is out here trying to secure the bag.

Instead of getting salty about the game roasting Florida’s iconic (and wildly unfiltered) reputation, local officials are leaning all the way in. They’re basically looking at the hype and asking: How do we convert Vice City hype into real-world revenue? Here’s how Miami-Dade is trying to monetise the hype, along with how the city actually feels about being the world’s favourite open-world sandbox.

The Playbook: Rebranding the Magic City

According to a proposal obtained by Local 10 News, the county is aiming high with its marketing tactics. We aren’t just talking about a few Instagram ads; they want to make the GTA aesthetic a physical reality.

Vice City International Airport: The county is pitching a temporary rebrand for Miami International Airport (MIA) to match the fictional landmark. Imagine stepping off your flight and immediately getting greeted by Vice City branding before you even hit baggage claim. Main character energy achieved instantly.

GTA-Themed Infrastructure: The pitch goes as granular as custom “Vice City” manhole covers scattered across the city. It’s subtle, but it’s the exact kind of detail that turns a standard sidewalk into a TikTok hotspot.

While the county figures out official partnerships, local spots are already seeing the financial ripple effect.

At souvenir shops across the city, sales are spiking for throwback gear referencing the original GTA: Vice City release back in 2002. “They love GTA. And most people visit here because of that,” said store manager Shruti Salwal, noting that retro Vice City merch is currently driving tourists through the doors.

Over in Wynwood—Miami’s ultimate art hub—murals dedicated to the franchise are becoming key photo ops. The city has always had an edge, and the game’s gritty, hyper-saturated interpretation from Ocean Drive out to the Everglades just reinforces the vibe people come to experience.

Of course, not everyone views the Vice City mirror as a pure compliment.

The game leans heavily into the wilder, chaotic side of Sunshine State lore. As one tourist visiting from Italy pointed out: “Grand Theft Auto is great, but it’s a little stereotypes, I think.”

She’s not wrong—Rockstar Games builds its empire on satire. But in 2026, satire sells. Miami-Dade knows that whether the game is highlighting South Beach glamour or Everglades airboats, millions of players are about to spend hundreds of hours virtually exploring their backyard. If turning that virtual obsession into real-world tourism dollars means embracing a few Florida tropes, the city seems more than ready to press start.

What do you think—would landing at “Vice City Airport” make you book a flight, or is the IRL rebrand a little too much?
