Miami-Dade voters made their voices heard yesterday — and the results are shaking up local politics.

In the District 3 commission race, no candidate secured a majority, meaning former Commissioner Frank Carollo and Rolando Escalona are headed to a runoff. Over in District 5, Christine King scored a decisive victory, winning with more than 84% of the vote.

Meanwhile, big changes are coming to Miami’s city constitution after residents voted on four referendums:

  • ✅ Referendum 1: Passed — establishes a charter review commission that will meet every 10 years.

  • ❌ Referendum 2: Failed — would have made it easier for the city to sell public land.

  • ✅ Referendum 3: Passed — bans gerrymandering and creates a citizens’ redistricting committee.

  • ✅ Referendum 4: Passed — sets a two-term limit for elected officials, replacing the previous rule that allowed candidates to run again after sitting out a term.

In Hialeah, history was made as 27-year-old Bryan Calvo was elected the city’s youngest mayor ever, defeating Interim Mayor Jackie Garcia-Roves with about 53% of the vote.

Several city council races were also decided — and some are still up in the air.

  • Melinda De La Vega secured the Group 6 seat.

  • Luis Rodriguez was reelected to Group 7.

  • Group 3 heads to a runoff between Gelien Perez and Jessica Castillo.

  • Group 4 will also face a runoff between Willy Marrero and Javier Morejon.

With fresh leadership, new laws, and a historic mayoral win, Miami-Dade’s political landscape is officially entering a new chapter.
