While Florida is famous for its sunshine, it has earned a much more dubious title in 2026: the fraud capital of the United States. According to the latest data from the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) and recent private surveys, the Sunshine State leads the nation in both fraud reports and identity theft incidents per capita.

For Floridians, the threat isn’t just a statistic—it’s a daily reality. Reports show that the state logged over 135,000 identity theft incidents in the first three quarters of 2025 alone, a staggering 61% increase year-over-year.

Experts point to several factors that make Florida a uniquely attractive target for domestic and international fraudsters:

  • The Demographic Goldmine: Florida’s large elderly population is a primary target. Scammers often exploit Medicare and healthcare-related fears; in 2025, Medicare fraud reports in Florida were nearly double the national average.

  • The “Miami-Fort Lauderdale” Hotspot: This metro area remains the #1 region in the U.S. for identity theft, reporting 903 cases per 100,000 residents. High-density luxury markets and a transient international population provide plenty of cover for “synthetic” identity theft (where real SSNs are mixed with fake names).

  • The Boom in Real Estate & Construction: Post-storm seasons often see a massive spike in contractor fraud and FEMA-related phishing scams, which are unique to Florida’s climate and economy.

Because the risk in Florida is five times higher than in states like South Dakota, residents must be more aggressive with their digital “hygiene.”

  • Freeze Your Credit: In Florida, this is no longer optional. A credit freeze is the most effective way to stop “new account” fraud, which makes up 90% of credit card theft.

  • Lock Your Mailbox: Mail theft remains a major source of identity leaks in Florida suburbs. If you have a curbside box, upgrade to a locking model or use a P.O. Box.

  • The “Storm Season” Rule: Be extremely wary of unsolicited calls from “insurers” or “contractors” following a hurricane. Always verify their license number through the Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation (DBPR).

  • Opt Out of Solicitations: Call 1-888-5-OPTOUT to stop pre-approved credit card offers from reaching your mailbox, where they are easily stolen by identity thieves.
