Miami-Dade Mayor Outraged Over Copa America Mess at Hard Rock Stadium
Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava has joined a chorus of condemnation following a dangerous rush of fans entering Hard Rock Stadium without tickets for Sunday night’s Copa America final between Argentina and Colombia. The incident, which saw fans pushing through gates, trampling people, hopping fences, climbing through the ventilation system, and trashing an escalator while evading police and security personnel, has sparked outrage and calls for a thorough investigation.
“We are outraged by the unprecedented events at tonight’s Copa America finals,” read a joint statement from Mayor Levine Cava and Chief Public Safety Officer James Reyes. The statement emphasized that while the Copa America final is organized by Conmebol, the Miami-Dade Police Department (MDPD) provides security support along with other law enforcement agencies. “Tonight, MDPD assigned 550 officers to the stadium, including our Priority Response Team,” the statement continued.
Mayor Levine Cava has demanded a full investigation into the incident, promising to hold responsible parties accountable. “What happened at Hard Rock Stadium during the Copa America match is completely unacceptable,” she stated in a press conference. “Our city prides itself on hosting world-class events, and this falls far short of our standards.”
The incident has put a spotlight on Miami’s readiness to host part of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, for which Hard Rock Stadium is a designated venue. Mayor Levine Cava assured residents and the international community that lessons would be learned from this experience.
