Pastel suits, cigarette boats, and synth beats are officially back on the big screen. Universal Pictures has confirmed that Joseph Kosinski, the visionary behind Top Gun: Maverick, will direct a brand-new Miami Vice movie set to hit theaters on August 6, 2027.
The upcoming film is set to reimagine Miami in the 1980s, drawing heavily from the iconic TV series that ran from 1984 to 1990 and starred Don Johnson and Philip Michael Thomas. That show not only changed television but also defined an era with its neon-lit aesthetic and genre-blending storytelling. Michael Mann’s 2006 big-screen version grossed $163.7 million, but this new take aims to give the franchise a fresh adrenaline shot for today’s audiences.
Casting is already underway, though no stars have been officially announced. The film will be shot in IMAX to deliver the kind of big, glossy visuals Kosinski is known for — think Top Gun-level spectacle but set against Miami’s pastel skyline and gritty underworld. The screenplay comes from Dan Gilroy and Eric Singer, while production will be handled by Dylan Clark (The Batman) alongside Kosinski himself.
Kosinski, who’s also attached to a Top Gun sequel and an Apple UFO thriller, is juggling some of the biggest projects in Hollywood right now. But with his knack for reimagining nostalgic properties for modern audiences, fans are hopeful he can capture the signature mix of style, swagger, and danger that made Miami Vice a cultural phenomenon in the first place.
The big question on everyone’s mind: can this reboot truly recapture the magic of Crockett and Tubbs’ world? If Kosinski’s track record is anything to go by, expect neon-lit nightclubs, fast boats, and a fresh dose of Miami glamour-meets-grit that could make this the rare reboot worth the hype.
