South Florida Police Warn Parents: Fentanyl Disguised as Candy Ahead of Halloween

Halloween is right around the corner, but South Florida police are urging parents to be extra cautious this year — because traffickers are reportedly disguising fentanyl as candy to target kids and young adults.

According to local officials, a recent traffic stop led to the seizure of fentanyl pills that looked exactly like colorful, pearlescent gumballs. Yeah — they literally looked like something you’d grab out of a candy jar. Police say dealers are doing this intentionally to attract younger people and hook them early, a dangerous trend that’s been spreading across the U.S.

So far this year, the department has taken over eight pounds of fentanyl off city streets — enough to potentially harm thousands of people.

Authorities are urging parents to check every piece of candy before kids dig in on Halloween night. If something looks off — weird packaging, strange texture, or candy that’s unwrapped — toss it immediately.

How to Spot a Fentanyl Overdose:
It can happen fast, and recognizing the signs can save a life. Look out for:

  • Slow or stopped breathing

  • Tiny (pinpoint) pupils

  • Cold, clammy skin

  • Unconsciousness or inability to wake up

  • Blue or gray lips and fingertips

If you ever suspect an overdose, call 911 immediately — and if you have Narcan (naloxone), use it right away.

Police Reminders for Residents:

  • Inspect all Halloween candy before kids eat it.

  • Learn the signs of a fentanyl overdose.

  • Seek help if you or someone you know is struggling with substance use.

  • Report any suspicious activity to law enforcement.

Stay safe, South Florida — check your treats, spread the word, and keep it spooky not scary this Halloween. 🎃👻
