Miami Beach Installs Life-Size Concrete Cars Underwater to Boost Reefs and Art

Only in Miami would you find a traffic jam that’s actually good for the planet. This week, crews started lowering life-size concrete cars underwater off Miami Beach as part of a massive new project called REEFLINE — where art, ocean life, and climate action all collide.

On Monday, the first of 22 concrete cars — each weighing around 13 tons — was carefully dropped to the ocean floor. It wasn’t easy; rough waves made the process take nearly an hour for just one car. But this is only the beginning: more deployments are planned throughout the week as part of the project’s first phase.

The idea? To turn the ocean floor into a seven-mile-long underwater sculpture park, featuring a surreal “traffic jam” of cars created by internationally renowned artist Leandro Erlich. But this isn’t just about cool visuals — it’s about saving the reef. Each car is seeded with coral to help restore marine habitats, protect the shoreline from storm surges, and promote biodiversity.

Visitors will soon be able to snorkel, dive, swim, paddleboard, or kayak to explore the installation when it officially opens in November. Think of it as the most Instagram-worthy crash site ever — minus the pollution.

The REEFLINE team hopes to raise $40 million to keep expanding the project with new sculptures inspired by sea stars, whales, and other ocean wonders. Their goal? To blend art, science, and education into a living, growing experience that connects Miami’s iconic coastline with the environment it depends on.

So yeah — next time someone complains about Miami traffic, tell them there’s a jam under the sea worth checking out. 🐠
