Travelers flying in and out of South Florida should prepare for major disruptions as the Federal Aviation Administration has ordered airlines to scale back traffic at Fort Lauderdale–Hollywood International Airport (FLL) and Miami International Airport (MIA) due to the ongoing government shutdown.
The FAA directive affects 40 airports across more than two dozen states, forcing carriers to reduce scheduled operations in an effort to maintain safety and staffing levels during the shutdown.
According to FlightAware, over 760 flights nationwide scheduled for Friday were already canceled by Thursday evening, with that number expected to rise as airlines update their schedules and adjust to the federal mandate. South Florida airports are bracing for delays, crowded terminals, and longer-than-normal wait times as the cuts take effect.
The FAA’s order requires a four percent reduction in scheduled operations starting Friday, with deeper cuts on the way. By November 14, airlines must scale back to a ten percent reduction, a move expected to impact peak travel periods and disrupt plans for thousands of passengers.
Travelers are encouraged to:
Check their flight status frequently
Arrive at the airport earlier than usual
Prepare for possible rebooking or extended delays
As the shutdown continues, airport officials and airlines warn that more schedule changes could come with little notice.
