Spirit Airlines has officially shut down, ending more than three decades of low-cost travel in a sudden move that caught passengers off guard.

The Florida-based airline ceased all operations on May 2, canceling every flight and leaving travelers stranded at airports across the country, including Fort Lauderdale, one of its busiest hubs.

For many, the impact was immediate. Travelers showed up to the airport expecting to fly, only to find empty counters, canceled departures, and no customer service available.

The shutdown follows years of financial struggles, including multiple bankruptcy filings and a failed attempt to secure a last-minute government bailout. Rising fuel costs and ongoing operational pressures ultimately pushed the airline past the point of recovery.

Spirit had built its reputation as one of the country’s most recognizable ultra-low-cost carriers, offering stripped-down base fares with optional add-ons. At its peak, it served destinations across the U.S., Caribbean, and Latin America and became a go-to option for budget travelers.

The closure affects roughly 17,000 employees and marks one of the most significant airline shutdowns in decades.

In response, several major airlines have begun offering limited discounted fares and additional routes to help stranded passengers rebook, though availability varies depending on location.

Passengers with existing bookings are being advised not to head to the airport and instead seek refunds or alternative travel arrangements.

After 34 years in the air, one of the most recognizable names in budget travel is no longer flying.
