The Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office (MDSO) hopped on socials this week to remind everyone: real cops will never call you asking for money over the phone. If someone does, it’s 100% a scam.

You get a “missed call” from someone claiming to be a Miami-Dade detective.
When you call back, they tell you you’ve got a warrant out for missing jury duty.
BUT (plot twist) you can “avoid arrest” by paying a $400 fee at MDSO headquarters in Doral.

One Miami resident, shared how the scam shook them:

“I had no idea… I just didn’t want to get detained, and I was afraid.”

Now, they are warning others:

“Verify in person. Even if you get that phone call, just go straight to the police station. Talk to someone face-to-face.”

And honestly? That’s the move.

he scam isn’t just a local thing either. The Federal Trade Commission says impersonation scams have jumped 4x since 2020.

How to protect yourself:

Don’t give personal info over the phone.
Double-check suspicious calls with the Clerk of Courts Office.
