Charlie Puth is getting candid about the lifestyle changes that have redefined his 30s. In a deeply personal interview with Rolling Stone published on January 20, the “Light Switch” singer revealed why he made the choice to stop drinking alcohol four years ago—a decision that has brought a new level of clarity to his life and music. Puth trace his sobriety back to a single night in New York City while he was preparing to release his 2022 self-titled album, Charlie. Wanting to celebrate the milestone, he decided to host a “rager,” but the aftermath was anything but celebratory.

“I don’t drink at all. I think it clouds my judgment,” Puth admitted. He described waking up the next morning with a hangover so severe it lasted for two days. Beyond the physical toll, it was the social disconnect that struck him most. After seeing photos of himself with strangers, he recalled a moment of isolation in a “scene-y” part of town.

“I saw them all eating, and then I just turned the other way and walked back to the hotel and just stayed there by myself for a couple days,” he shared. “It’s profound when it just all comes to a screeching halt one day at 30 years old.”

The decision to surround himself with the “right things” comes at a pivotal moment. Puth is currently balancing a massive professional rollout with a major personal milestone: he and his wife, Brooke Sansone, are expecting their first child together. Musically, the singer is entering his most ambitious era yet. His fourth studio album, Whatever’s Clever!, is set to drop on March 27, 2026. The lead single, “Beat Yourself Up,” has already given fans a taste of the refined, pop-forward sound he’s been perfecting in his home studio.
