Only in Miami! Ahead of the highly anticipated release of Grand Theft Auto VI, Miami-Dade County officials have explored a possible collaboration with Rockstar Games that would bring pieces of the game’s fictional Vice City — which is heavily inspired by Miami — into the real 305.
Ideas reportedly discussed include temporarily rebranding parts of Miami International Airport as “Vice City Airport,” along with Vice City-branded Metromover trains and even GTA-themed manhole covers around the county.
But not everyone is ready to enter Vice City. Miami-Dade Commissioner JC Bermudez and Sheriff Rosie Cordero-Stutz have publicly opposed the proposal, raising concerns about associating Miami-Dade and its public spaces with a video game franchise centered around crime and violence.
For now, nothing has been formally approved by the Miami-Dade County Commission, so don’t expect to see “Vice City” on your boarding pass just yet.
Still, with GTA VI set to release November 19, Miami is once again finding itself at the center of pop culture — and we have a feeling everyone will be watching the 305.
